Microscope Flashcards
Name the parts of the microscope
Oculars (eyepiece), stage, objective lens, condenser, nosepiece, arm, base, lamp, coarse focus nob, fine focus nob, stage motion nob, power switch and brightness control
What do the oculars (eyepiece) do?
The individual can view the enlarged object
What does the arm of the microscope do
It supports the lenses, mirrors, and body tubes.
The microscope should be carried with one hand, holding the arm and the other under the base
What does the coarse focus knob do
It moves the stage up and down quickly and to find the specimen when using the low power objective
What does the fine focus knob do
It makes small adjustments, esp when using the high power objective
What does the body tube do
It passes light from the head to the eyepiece
What does the power switch do
It turns the light on and off
What does the light source do
It illuminates the specimen by shining light through it
What does the rotating head do
It allows the body tube to rotate 360 degrees and contains mirrors
What does the objective lens do
It produces magnification. High power lens (blue strip) magnifies 40x. Low power lens (yellow strip) magnifies 10x
What does stage do
It holds the slide and has an opening that allows light to pass through the specimen
What does the diaphragm of the microscope do
It is a rotating dial that controls the passage of light through the stage. Numbers indicate the amount of light that is passing. Less numbers = less light. More numbers = more light
5 is the highest amount of light. 1 is the lowest amount of light
What does the base do
-supports the microscope
-contains electrons
-microscope should be carried with one hand under the base and the other hand holding the arm
How should the microscope be carried
microscope should be carried with one hand under the base and the other hand holding the arm
