Micropropogation, Cloning Etc Flashcards
What is an explant?
An explant is a small piece of tissue taken from the plant being cloned.
How is a callus created through micropropagation?
Firstly, a small sample of tissue is taken from the plant - (an explant).
The explant is then sterilised and transferred into a sterile Petri dish.
This Petri dish contains a growth medium that encourages the explant cells to grow - forming a callus.
What is a callus?
A callus is a small mass of plant cells.
What is a callus?
A callus is a small mass of plant cells.
How does a callus develop into a plant?
After each callus form, it is transferred into a new growth medium - this contains hormones that stimulate the growth of roots, leaves and a stem.
This causes the callus to develop into a plantlet - which can be placed into a pot where it will develop into a plant.
Describe the process of cloning an adult.
The nucleus is removed from an unfertilised egg cell and the nucleus from an adult body cell is inserted.
The cell is stimulated with electricity - causing mitosis.
