microorganisms Flashcards
What are the four categories of microorganisms?
-bacteria
-virus
-fungi
-protozoa
What are the parts of bacteria?
-flagella–> for movement
-pilli–> to attach to surfaces
-cell wall–> to maintain shape (made out of peptidoglycan)
-strand of chromosome–> contain genetic material
-plasmid–> a ring of dna
-ribosome–> site of protien production
-cell membrane–> control what goes in and out of the cell
-cytoplasm–> where all chemical reactions occur
what are prokarytotic organisms?
prokaryotic organisms:
-dont contain a nucleus
-does not contain membrane-bound organelles (mitochondria, chloroplast)
-unicellular organisms
advantages and disadvantages of bacteria
+They help make yoghurt (lactobacillus)
+Good bacteria in your gut help digestion
+Bacteria work as decomposers
-causes diseases
-makes food go bad
points on fungi
there can be unicellular and multicellular fungi
fungi are eukaryotic
none of the fungi contain chlorophyll and they never do photosynthesis
they do saprotrophic nutrition
advantages and disadvantages of fungi
+mushrooms are a high protien source
+yeast helps make breads and wine
+fungi are decomposers
+produce antibodies
-can cause diseases
-make food go bad
points of protozoa/protoctists
eukaryotic organisms
some can be multicellular
some look like animal cells (ameoba) and are known as protozoa
some contain chlorophyll (algea) and are known as protoctists
some cause diseases
points on viruses
viruses are obligate parasites
all viruses are pathogens
viruses only have a protein coat and DNA or RNA
viruses infect the host by injecting their own DNA into the hosts nucleus
when the virus particles assemble, the host will explode, releasing more viruses into the blood
