what is digestion?
digestion is breaking down large insoluble molecules to smaller soluble molecules in blood.
What does the mouth do?
Both physical and chemical digestion happen here. The teeth crush and tear food into small pieces. The starch is converted to maltose by amylase, an enzyme made in the salivary glands.
What does the oesophagus do?
The oesophagus is a long tube that pushes food down it to the stomach using peristalsis movement. There is a small lid called the epiglottis, more commonly known as the uvula, that closes over the trachea while eating so we don’t choke.
what does the stomach do?
the stomach is a muscular sack that can stretch out depending on the amount. stomach walls contain hydrochloric acid which give the stomach a pH of 2.5 - 3. its important to kill pathogens in the food and to give the optimum pH for the enzyme pepsin
what does the small intestine do?
the small intestine secrets enzymes and digests food and absorbs nutrients. the large intestine absorbs water
