What is micromeritics?
Micromeritics is the branch of science that deals with the study of small particles which is the range of micrometers.
The scale of micrometeritics
I micrometer = 10^-6 m / 10^-4cm/ 10^-3 mm
Micromeritics deals with
Fundamentals properties of particles and derived properties of particles and their influence on manufacturing process, drug release and selection of packaging systems etc
Particle size influence on dissolution rate which inturn influence on the absorption and bioavailability
Lesser the particle size higher the surface area and larger the absorption and bioavailability
Particle size determines the stability of the drug
Lower the particle size lesser the sedimentation rate and higher the stability of the suspension
Lower the globule size lesser the rate of creaming and greater the stability of the emulsion
Lesser the particle size higher will be the mixing efficiency and higher the drug uniformity h
Higher the surface area higher will be the rate of dissolution , absorption and bioavailability
Spherical and symmetrical particle shape can result in better flow property compressibility and ease of manufacturing
Particle number determination can provide the information regarding density and porosity
Density porosity and bulkiness determination can provide information regarding drug release packing arrangements selection of containers manufacturing equipments etc
Determination of flow properties can help to select the ideal powder blend which is suitable for processing as tablet or capsule
All micromeritic properties can actually as quality control test for raw materials used in the manufacturing
