Microbiology Vocab Flashcards
Obligate Aerobes
Need the same air we breathe to survive. Prefer same atmosphere.
Obligate Anaerobes
Will die if exposed to air
Microaerophiles
Need small concentrations of air to survive
Capnophiles
require increased concentrations of CO2
4 Phases of Population Growth Curve
1) Lag - normal bacterial growth no reproduction
2) Exponential - binary fission occurs and population increases
3) Stationary - nutrients get depleted and bacteria compete for them. Dying = new born
4) Death - nutrients become decrease and waste products increase, the number of dying cells continues to rise.
Aspetic Technique
Practiced when it’s important to keep microbes away from an area
Sepsis
Prince of pathogen in blood or tissue
Asepsis
Absence of pathogens from human
Antisepsis
The prevention of infection
Sterilization
The complete destruction of all microbes
Disinfection
Removal/destruction of pathogens from a non-living body
Disinfectants
chemical substances that kill pathogens on inanimate objects
Antiseptics
Solutions used to disinfect skin and other living tissues
Methods to inhibit Microbial Growth
1) Dessication
2) PH
3) Cold temp
4) Filters
5) Radiation
6) UV
7) Gaseous atmosphere
Carbohydrates have what elements?
C, H, O
