Microbiology Exam 1 pt 3 Flashcards
Plasmids
“extra” DNA that cells can pick up in the right conditions
Often exist outside the Chromosome
Episome: Plasmid that is integrated into the
Cell
Often offer an advantage to the cell
Transcription/ Tanslation
Same as Eukaryotes, but can occur simultaneously
Cell Division
DNA replication is coordinated with opposite sides of the cell
Meiosis does NOT occur
Septation complete cell divison
FtsZ in Bacteria and Archaea
Motility
Pili: Straight filaments of pillin protein
Sex Pilus
Twitching motility
Fimbriae: Used during attachment
Flagellum
Monotrichous: one flagella
Amphitrichous: single flagella at both
ends
Lophotrichous: several flagella on each
end
Peritrichous: random flagella around the
cell
Chemotaxis: “run and tumble”
Endospores: help protect cell from death in
unfavorable conditions
