Microbiology Flashcards
Gram + Cell Wall Structure
- 2-layers
- Thick
- NO porin channel
- NO periplasmic space
- Susceptible to breakdown by penicillins and lysozyme
- NO endotoxin
Gram - Cell Wall Structure
- 3-layers
- Thin
- Porin channel
- Periplasmic space
- NOT susceptible to breakdown by penicillins and lysozyme
- Endotoxin (outer membrane)
NUP and NUG are caused by what bacteria?
Treponema denticola
Obligate Aerobes
- must have oxygen to survive
- have all enzymes
Facultative Anaerobes
- can live and grow with or without oxygen
* MOST DISEASE-CAUSING ORGANISMS*
Anaerobic Bacteria =
bacteria that do NOT live or grow when oxygen is present
Aerobic Bacteria =
bacteria that require oxygen to live or grow
Microaerophilic Bacteria
“aerotolerant anaerobes” - do NOT use oxygen at all, but they can survive in oxygen-rich environments
Obligate Anaerobes
- CANNOT tolerate oxygen
* live in periodontal pockets AND sulcus*
Lag Phase (#1)
“resting phase”
- growth is SLOW as bacteria acclimate to their environment
- CELLULAR METABOLIC ACTIVITY WAS NOT INCREASED DURING LAG PHASE*
Logarithmic “exponential” Phase (#2)
- growth occurs “exponentially” (very rapidly)
* MICROORGANISMS ARE MOST PRONE TO BREAKDOWN BY ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS*
Stationary Phase
- no net increase or decrease in cell numbers; nutrients used up and waste products build up
Death Phase
- microbes die off
Streptococcus =
- spherical GRAM + cocci (chains or pairs)
- non-mobile
- microaerophilic (need oxygen)
- catalase negative
3 groups of Streptococcus Bacteria
- Beta-hemolytic streptococcus *
- Alpha-hemolytic streptococcus
- Gamma-hemolytic streptococcus
