Microbiology Flashcards
1
Q
Antifungals
How does Amphotericin work?
A
Targets ergosterol in the plasma membrane and causes pore formation –> leads to cell death
2
Q
Antifungals
How do Azoles work?
A
Affect the ergosterol synthetic pathway
3
Q
Antifungals
4 disadvantages of Azoles
A
- High first pass metabolism (bio availability = 45%)
- ADR’s –> can hause hepatitis
- Drug interactions due to CYP450
- Resistance can develop, e.g. in candida
4
Q
Antibiotics
Name two classifications of antibiotics that inhibit cell wall synthesis
A
- Glycopeptides
- Beta-lactams
5
Q
Glycopeptides
2 examples
A
- Vancomycin
- Teicoplanin
6
Q
Glycopeptides
Uses
A
- Severe staphylococcus infections
E.g. MRSA, C.diff
7
Q
Glycopeptides
Cautions
A
- Renal impairment
- History of deafness
- Pregnancy
8
Q
Glycopeptides
Side effects
A
- Nephrotoxicity
- Ototoxicity
(must be monitored to prevent the above) - Blood disorders, e.g. neutropenia
