How does whooping cough present

Bordetella pertussis is a fastidious bacteria that does not growth well in culture medium 1. Nasal Swabs for culture 2. Nasal swab for PCR Above must be < first 3 weeks 3. Serology
How to Tx whooping cough
- Macrolides (clarithromycin, erythromycin, azithromycin) for 7 days
- Only effective in 21 days
- Aim to reduce risk of spreading infections
after this point don’t Tx
- stay home from school
- notifiable disease
What is haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS)
What is it caused by?
It is is a triad of:
Microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia (Coombs’ test negative).
Thrombocytopenia.
Acute kidney injury (acute renal failure).
