Microbiology Flashcards
What bacteria have gram stain limitations?
These Rascals May Microscopically Lack Color
Treponema, Rickettsia, Mycoplasma, Mycobacteria, Legionella pneumophilia, Chlamydia
Which bacteria stain well with Giesma stain?
Chlamydia, Borrelia, Rickettsiae, Trypanosomes, Plasmodium
Certain Bugs Really Try my Patience
What are the obligate anaerobes?
Clostridium and Bacteriodes
Name the obligate aerobes
Nocardia, Pseudomonas, Mycobacterium, Bacillus
Nagging Pests Must Breathe
Name the obligate intracellular bugs
Rickettsia and Chlamydia (can’t make own ATP)
Name the facultative intracellular bugs
Salmonella, Neisseria, Brucella, Mycobacterium, Listeria, Francisella, Legionella, Yersinia pestis.
(Some Nasty Bugs May Live FacultativeLY)
What are the encapsulated bacteria?
Strep. pneumo, H. influenza type b, N. meningitidis, E. coli, Salmonella, Klebsiella, and Group B strep
Catalase Positive organisms
Pseudomonas, Listeria, Aspergillus, Candida, E. coli, S. aureus, Serratia
(you need PLACESS for your CATs)
Why would you conjugate a protein to a polysaccharide capsule antigen in making a vaccine?
To promote T-cell activation and subsequent class switching. The polysaccharide antigen alone cannot be presented to the T cells; therefore, only IgM antibodies would be produced.
Name the Urease-positive bugs
Cryptococcus, H. pylori, Proteus, Ureaplasma, Nocardia, Klebsiella, S. epidermidis, S. saprophyticus
