How is gonorrhoea diagnosed?
NAAT
Men: first pass urine sample or urethral swab
Women: endocervical or urethral swab
What is the treatment of gonorrhoea?
Sensitivity unknown: 1g IM Ceftriaxone once only
Sensitivity known: 500mg PO Ciprofloxacin once only
What are the most common organisms causing osteomyelitis?
Staph aureus
Strep pyogenes, haemophilus influenza, e.coli
In sickle cell: salmonella
What is the treatment of osteomyelitis?
Flucloxacillin
MRSA suspected: Vancomycin
What is the incubation period of varicella zoster?
10-21 days
How is cryptococcus neoformans transmitted?
Inhalation of spores found in bird droppings (pigeon fanciers)
What is the gram stain, shape and O2 requirements of e.coli?
- Gram negative
- Bacilli
- Facultative anaerobe
E.Coli is most commonly associated with which infections?
- Uncomplicated UTI
- UTI associated with catheters
- Neonatal meningitis and sepsis (from the vaginal canal)
- Travellers diarrhoea
- Bloody diarrhoea associated with haemolytic uraemic syndrome
What is the gram stain, shape and O2 requirements of Bordetella pertussis?
- Gram negative
- coccobacilli
- obligate aerobe
What is the incubation period of Bordetella Pertussis?
7-10 days
