Microbiology Flashcards
Define obligate aerobe
An organism the only grows/divides in the presence of oxygan. Cannot survive/grow without oxygen
Define obligate anaerobe
An organism that only grows/divides in the absence of oxygen. Cannot survive/divide if oxygen is present
Define facultative anaerobe
An organism the can grow/divide in the presence or absence of oxygen but divides more quickly when oxygen is present
State autoclave conditions for cultured plates and to sterilise equipment
121 degrees C for 15 mins
Define total cell count
Counts all living and dead cells in a known volume/mass of a substance/liquid
Define viable cell count
Counts all living cells in a known mass/volume of a substance/liquid.
One cell forms one colony (assumption), therefore alive. No allowance for clumping therefore underestimate
