Microbio - viral hepatitis Flashcards
Which hep virus is DNA?
HBV
Hepatitis A virus - time course? how can this be identified in blood?
Usually acute - leads to raised anti-HAV IgM
anti-HAV IgG is raised if previous infection or vaccinated
Transmission of HAV/HBV/HCV/HEV?
HAV = FO route HBV = Sexual, vertical, blood products HCV = blood products (rarely sexual) HEV = FO route
Mx of HAV?
Incubation period for HAV?
2-6 weeks incubation period
Tends to last 3 weeks and is treated supportively
HBV infection - time course?
Acute OR chronic if lasts >6 months
How is HBV infection identified?
presents of HBVsurface Ag
LFTs in HBV infection?
ALT ++, AST +
3 drugs used for chronic HBV infection
pegIFNalpha
Lamivudine
Tenofovir
How is the liver affected in chronic HBV and HCV infection?
Fibrosis –> cirrhosis –> HCC
Incubation period of HBV
2-6 MONTHS
HCV - time course?
80% chronic!!!!! rest are acute
How is HCV diagnosed and why?
Can’t use anti-HCV antibody, as its levels only rise AFTER the event.
thus monitor HCV viral levels + ALT
what kind of virus is hCV?
flavivirus
How is IFN given and administered for HCV infection?
Pegylated IFN
Given once a week as depot injection
new treatment for HCV? what are its benefits?
SVR12
Oral treatment that is IFN free with a short tx course!
HEV - describe the diff genotypes?
Genotypes 1 and 2 = human
3 and 4 = swine
Risk factors for HEV infection
uncooked pork and shellfish consumption, blood products
HEV - high prevalence in which country?
Time course?
India + acute!
To whom is HEV particularly dangerous
pregnant women –> high mortality!
Mx of HEV?
supportive, unless chronic (?ribavirin)
