Microbial growth Flashcards
Psychrophiles
Cold loving microbes.
they grow in cold weather
Mesophiles
Bacteria that grow in moderate temperatures
(20 to 50 deg C)
Thermophiles
Heat loving bacteria
50+ deg Cel
Acidophiles
bacteria that like a low pH (4 or less)
like acidic conditions
Akalineophiles
Bacteria that grow in basic conditions ph9 or more
Halophiles
bacteria that can grow in salty envt
Osmotolarent
Can service salty conditions
Staphylococcus aureus is an example…we have salty skin it survives
Fastidious
These are picky bacteria. They are hard to grow becuase they are picky about conditions. If not right they won’t grow.
Obliged aerobes/areobes
- Require oxygen
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis (infect lungs)
- Pseudomonas auregenosa (this is an opertuneistic bacteria)
Facultative anaerobes
- grow aerobic and anarobicly
- Whichever allows more energy to be produced
- often gut MO’s
- E. coli,
- Proteus sp.
Anaerobes
- Can only service with little to no oxygen present
- Clostridium sp. is one example
Aerotolerent anaerobes
- only anarobicly matabalism
- can service when oxygen is present
- streptococcus pyogenes is an example
Microareophiles
arobic growth but at lower levels of O2
normally requires increase CO2
found in stomach, vaginal areas, spinal column
Neisseria meningiditis, Neisseria ghonaria
Capnophiles
Barophiles
Bacteria that can withstand high barometric pressure
