Microbes in the Blood Flashcards
What can blood stream infection be caused by?
bacteria (bacteremia) (staph aureus)
fungi (fungaemia) (candida albicans)
viruses (viraemia) (herpes simplex)
What are the sources of microbes in the blood?
broken skin/mucous membranes
from a focus of infection in the body (abcess)
GIT
direct inoculation into vascular system
What is a transient presence?
Several minutes Bacteremia
Usually caused by manipulation of
or surgical procedure involving infected tissues (I.e extractions)
What is an intermittent presence?
Transient presence associated with an undrained abscess or infected biofilm in variety of systemic and localsied infections
What is a continous presence?
Severe infection that has overwhelmed host defences e.g., infective endocarditis (maybe associated with sepsis)
What are the two most common microbes in BS infections?
e. coli (ECB)
s. aureus (SAB)
What were 96% of staph aureus cases?
MSSA
What can HPV cause neonatal?
sepsis
How is bacteria in the blood detected?
Automated blood culture systems e.g, BacTec
Molecular technologies
What is infective endocarditis?
Infection of the heart valves or other areas of the endocardium
What are the predisposing causes for infective endocarditis?
Rheumatic valvular disease
Congenital heart disease
Mitral valve prolapse with murmur
Degenerative heart disease
What bacteria is native valve endocarditis mostly caused by?
strep
severe cases are caused by s.aureus
What type is pyogenic group strep?
hameolytic?
beta haemolytic
What is an example of a coagulase negative staph?
s.epidermidis
Why are sub type intravenous drug users infected with NVE different from other forms?
Younger age group
Staphylococcus aureus predominant microbe
Mostly affects valves on the right side of the heart Can give rise to multiple lung abscesses (& elsewhere)
