Microbes Flashcards
Micro-organism (microbe)
A microorganism, or microbe, is a microscopic organism, which may exist in its single-celled form or a colony of cells.
microscope
a laboratory instrument used to examine objects that are too small to be seen by the naked eye.
microbiologist
A microbiologist is a scientist who studies microscopic life forms and processes.
International System of Units (SI system)
The International System of Units (SI), commonly known as the metric system, is the international standard for measurement.
SI unit
SI unit is an international system of measurements that are used universally in technical and scientific research to avoid the confusion with the units.
SI prefix
a unit prefix that precedes a basic unit of measure to indicate a multiple or submultiple of the unit.
metre
the base unit of length in the International System of Units.
millimetre
a unit of length in the metric system, equal to one thousandth of a metre
micrometre
an SI derived unit of length equalling 1×10−6 metre (SI standard prefix “micro-“ = 10−6); that is, one millionth of a metre
nanometres
is a unit of length in the metric system, equal to one billionth (short scale) of a metre (0.000000001 m).
viruses
A virus is a submicroscopic infectious agent that replicates only inside the living cells of an organism.
bacteria
Bacteria are single-cell organisms that are neither plants nor animals
protista
any eukaryotic organism that is not an animal, plant, or fungus.
fungi
a kingdom of usually multicellular eukaryotic organisms that are heterotrophs (cannot make their own food) and have important roles in nutrient cycling in an ecosystem.
prokaryotes
a cellular organism that lacks an envelope-enclosed nucleus.
