botany Flashcards
gametophyte generation
Gametophytes are the stage which produces sex cells in plants and algae that undergo alternation of generations
sporophyte generation
A phase in the life cycle of certain plants and algae that starts with the union of gametes up to the time that sporess are produced.
meiosis
a type of cell division that results in four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell, as in the production of gametes and plant spores.
mitosis
a type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus, typical of ordinary tissue growth.
haploid
having a single set of unpaired chromosomes.
diploid
containing two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.
fertilization
the action or process of fertilizing an egg or a female animal or plant, involving the fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote.
germination
the development of a plant from a seed or spore after a period of dormancy.
sexual reproduction
the production of new living organisms by combining genetic information from two individuals of different types (sexes).
asexual reproduction
is a type of reproduction that does not involve the fusion of gametes or change in the number of chromosomes.
