Microbes Flashcards
What is a protist?
A protist is a unicellular microscopic organism.
What are 3 facts about protists?
- They live in rivers, lakes, ponds or in water in the soil
- Some are plant-like because of the chlorophyll they contain and can make their own food using photosynthesis
- Many have structures outside the cell to help called flagella to help them move through water.
What is pasteurisation?
The heat treatment of foods such as milk to destroy micro-organisms.
What are 2 different types of microbes?
- Bacteria
- Fungi
- Viruses
How do viruses reproduce?
By inserting genetic information into a host cell to create viral replicates.
What are the uses of microbes?
- Decomposing dead organisms
- Making foods such as cheese, yogurt, bread and wine
- Producing medical drugs
Where can you find bacteria?
Everywhere, but many prefer warm and wet places
What are some types of microbes?
Virus, bacteria, fungi, protist
What are the structures called on a protist and what do they do?
- Cilia and flagella
- Cilia moves food towards it and moves the protist through water
- Flagella enables movement through water
What is a good temperature for an incubator?
27 - 38 C
No lower than 0 degrees
What are 2 safety precautions when using an incubator?
- Keeping it clean and sterile
- Make sure to monitor the temperature
What are the different shapes of bacteria?
Rod, spherical and spiral
Why are some bacteria called decomposers?
Decomposers break down dead and decaying organisms into smaller substances.
What are two ways to control infections caused by bacteria?
- Using appropriate hand hygiene
- Personal protective equiptment
