Microanatomy Flashcards
What are the 4 layers of the GI tract walls?
Mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, serosa
What are the three components of the mucosa?
The epithelium, lamina propria and muscularis mucosa
What is in the submucosa?
dense connective tissue containing submucosal plexus
Which layer controls peristalsis?
Muscularis externa
Which layer forms part of the peritoneum?
The serous layer
What type of muscle is the top third of the oesophagus?
Skeletal muscle
What type of muscle is the bottom third of the oesophagus?
smooth muscle
Where are mucus secreting glands in the oesophagus?
The lamina propria (mucosa) and the submucosa
What epithelial cells line the oesophagus?
Squamous
What are the recessions between micro villi called?
Crypts
What type of epithelium is in the small intetsine?
Simple columnar
What 4 specialised cells are within the epithelium of the villi?
Absorptive cells, goblet cells, granular cells and APUD cells
How often is the epithelium renewed?
every 3-6 days
Is the epithelium of the large intestines villous?
No
Describe the large intetsing epithelium
Simple columnar, with crypts but no villi.
