Accessory organs of digestion Flashcards
What quadrant is the liver in?
Right upper quadrant. directly below the diaphragm
What are the functions of the liver?
Glucose storage, protein, lipoprotein and cholesterol synthesis, production of bile and bile salts, storage of fat, toxin and drug metabolism and excretion
What are the four lobes of the liver?
right, left, cuadate and quadrate
What liver lobes are anterior?
Right and left
Which is the superior lobe, cuadate or quadrate?
Cuadate
What are the regions of the gall bladder?
Fundus, body and neck
What does the neck of the gall bladder lead into?
The cystic duct
What does the biliary tree do?
For the flow of bile
What are some functions of bile?
Bicarbonate content decreases pH of the gastric contents released from the stomach. Emulsion of fats by bile salts increases SA of insoluble nutrients to raise rate of digestion
What cells produce bile?
Hepatocytes
Where is bile stored and concentrated?
The gall bladder
When is bile needed in the small intestine?
After a high fat meal
What runs between each layer of hepatocytes?
Sinusoids
What are small channels between hepatocyte cells called?
Canaliculi
What does bile drain from the liver in?
The right and left hepatic ducts
What do the right and left hepatic ducts join to form?
The common hepatic duct
What joins the common hepatic duct to form the common bile duct?
The cystic duct from the gall bladder
The common bile duct goes into where?
The descending duodenum
What stimulates the gall bladder to contract?
Food in the small intestine
What is the name of the combination of the ducts?
The biliary tract
Where does the main pancreatic duct join the common bile duct?
The hepatopancreatic ampulla
Where does the pancreas lie?
Horizontally across the posterior abdominal wall
What are the 5 regions of the pancreas?
The uncinate process, head, neck, body and tail
Which tissues of the pancreas release pancreatic juice?
Exocrine tissues
