What is a microagression?
Brief, everyday exchanges that send negative messages to a target group such as people of color, women, and gays
What form of racism is more insidious - intentional or unintentional?
Unintentional - Unintentional racists are unaware of the harmful consequences of their behavior. Example would be the sports teams and brands.
What are the 3 types of microagressions?
Microassault, micro insult, mircroinvalidations.
What is a microassault?
Blatant verbal, nonverbal, or environmental attack intended to convey discriminatory and biased sentiments. (overt or old-fashioned racism)
What is microinsult?
Unintentional behaviors or verbal comments that convey rudeness or insensitivity or demean a person’s racial heritage/identity, gender identity, or sexual orientation identity . (use “gay” in a derogatory way)
What is microinvalidation?
Verbal comments or behaviors that exclude, negate, or dismiss the psychological thoughts, feelings, or experiential reality of the target group
(“you are making too big of deal about how you were treated.” or seeing only white people on the waiting room art)
What are some of the impacts of microaggressions?
immediate distress, mental health suffers, substance use problems, low self-esteem, physical health impacted
What are some ways to respond to microagressions?
speak up for those with less voice or power. Recognize what you are feeling internally. Speak from I statements. (I am uncomfortable with this word/converstation. DONT DENY THAT A MICROAGRESSION OCCURED
