Micro lecture exam 2 Flashcards
Properties of DNA
1.) DNA must contain biologically useful information (living) in a stable form
2.) DNA must be capable of reproduction=replication=growth/divide
3.) DNA must be decodable (template)- transcription/translation
4.) DNA must be able to change or show variation (mutation)(mutate/adapt)
DNA is made from…?
Nucleotides= phosphate, pentose (5c sugar) and a (nitrogenous) base
list the Nitrogenous bases–>
Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, Thymine (attached to sugars)
- the bases form pairs in the center of the DNA
center- hydrogen bonds hold the base pairs together
- the base pairs undergo complementary base pairing
1.) A&T pair with 2 hydrogen bonds A:::T
2.) G&C pair with 3 hydrogen bonds C::::G
A hydrogen bond is a weak bond between…..
H…O or H…N
- easy to make and easy to break
Why are hydrogen bonds important in the DNA structure ?
- because they are weak they can easily be broken
- when they’re broken we call it unzipped
- they can be reformed or zipped
