Micro Lecture 2 Flashcards
What are plasmids?
Self-replicating circular pieces of DNA, 1-5% the size of bact. chromosome
What are transposons?
Segments of DNA that can move from one region of DNA to another
What are insertion sequences?
Sequences in transposons that cut and reseal DNA
Fermentation test
Bacteria that catabolize carb or protein produce acid, pH indicator turns yellow
Oxidase test
Tests for bacteria that have cytochrome oxidase (produces gas bubbles)
Define antigenic
Stimulates body to form antibodies
Slide agglutination test
Bacteria agglutinate when mixed with antiserum containing antibodies produced in response to that strain
Phage typing
Plaques (clearings) appear where phages infect and lyse bacterial cells
DNA chip (microarray)
Contains DNA probes, detects pathogens by hybridization
Selective toxicity
Destroying pathogens without destroying host
Bacteriocidal
Kills microbes directly
Bacteriostatic
Prevents microbes from growing
Penicillin
beta-lactam ring, prevents cross-linking of peptidoglycans, interferes with primarily gram-positive
Aminoglycosides
Change shape of ribosome, ex. streptomycin
Tetracyclines
Broad spectrum, interfere with tRNA attachment to ribosome
