MicorBioligy Flashcards
Microbiology
The study of small living things (viruses, bacteria and fungi)
Bacteria
Large than viruses. Simple single-celled: no nucleus. Divided into aerobes and anaerobes Reproduce asexually
Aerobe
Need oxygen
Anaerobes
Don’t need oxygen
Asexually
Clone, double numbers in 20mins
In preserving to grow bacteria need
Food, Water, A suitable temperature and a suitable ph
Soli bacteria
Break down (decompose) dead plant and animal material to release nutrients into the soil
Uses of bacteria
Decay, wastes make cheese, yogurt, insulin and silage
Harmful bacteria
Causes disease, food spoilage and tooth decay
Parasite
Obtain their food from feeding on their living organisms
Saprophyte
Obtain their food either from dead organisms or from their wastes
Fungi used in
Brewing, baking, making antibiotics and some are edible
Harmful fungi
Cause disease in plants and animals, food spoilage and are poisonous
Viruses
Can only reproduce inside living things
Viruses cause
Colds, Flu, Measles, Mumps and AIDS
