Michenbaum (1972) improving - Cognitive Flashcards
Aim
To compare SIT (stress inoculation techniques) with standard behavioural systematic desensitization and a control group on a waiting list.
Method
Field experiment - students assessed before and after treatment using self report and grade averages.
Participants
21 students aged from 17 - 25 who responded
Design
matched pairs design with random allocation to SIT group, waiting list (control group) or standard systematic desensitization group.
matched on gender and anxiety levels
Procedure
SIT group: 8 therapy sessions, given positive statements to say and taught relaxation techniques.
Systematic desensitisation group: 8 therapy sessions with progressive relaxation training - encouraged to practice at home.
Results
Performance on tests improved in the SIT group most.
significant difference between two therapy groups and control.
Conclusions
SIT is a more effective way of reducing anxiety in students who are anxiety prone in test situations. It is more effective than behavioural therapy as it adds a cognitive component to the therapy.
