Holmes and Rahe (1967) Measures - Self-report Flashcards
Aim
To create a method that establishes the extent to which life events are stressors
Method
Questionnaire self report designed to ascertain how much each life event was felt to be a stressor
participants
394
179 m
215 f
Procedure
Each participant was asked to rate a series of 43 life events. marriage was given an arbitrary rating of 50.
each event was to be judged as requiring more or less readjustment.
ratings could be based on own experiences or perceptions of other peoples experiences
Results
The final SRRS was completed on the mean scores allocated by participants.
correlations were high in all groups but one.
there was less correlation between white and black people.
Conclusions
The degree of similarity between different groups is impressive and shows agreement in general of what constitutes a life event and how much stress they cause.
