What is a manager?
Someone who works with and through other people by coordinating their work activities to accomplish organizational goals.
What are the types of managers?
First line managers, middle managers, top managers
What do first line managers do?
They manage the work of non-managerial employees who typically are involved with producing the organization’s customers. These managers often have titles such as supervisors or shift managers, district managers, department managers, or office managers
What do middle managers do?
Managers between the first-line level and the top level of the organization who manage the work of first-line managers
What do top managers do?
Managers at or near the top level of the organization who are responsible for making organization-wide decisions and establishing the plans and goals that affect the entire organization
What is an organization?
It’s a deliberate arrangement of people to accomplish some specific purpose
Why are managers important to organizations?
They can inspire, energize, provide feedback, coaching, help employee stay informed. They can manager activities during uncertain and complex times. They are critical to get things done (coordinate workplace environment, find out why work isn’t getting done and fix it). They matter to organizations (Depending on relationship with employees, they can positively or negatively affect engagement)
What is management?
Involves coordinating and overseeing the work activities of others so their activities are completed efficiently and effectively
What is efficiency?
Getting the most output from the least amount of inputs
What is effectiveness?
Completing activities so that organizational goals are achieved

A management function that involves setting goals, establishing a strategy for achieving those goals, and developing plans to integrate and coordinate activities

What is ‘leading’ in management functions?
A management function that involves working with and through people to accomplish organizational goals
What is ‘controlling’ in management functions?
A management function that involves monitoring, comparing, and correcting work performance

Managerial roles that involve people and other duties that are ceremonial and symbolic in nature

How may social media become problematic?
It can become a way for boastful employees to brag about their accomplishments, for managers to publish one-way messages to employees, or for employees to argue or gripe about something or someone they don’t like at work
What do progressive companies realize?
Importance of treating employees well not only because it’s simple the right thing to do but also because it is good business
What is universality of management?
The reality that management is needed in all types and sizes or organizations, at all organizational levels, in all organizational areas, and in organizations no matter where they’re located
Why study management?
Once you graduate from college or university, you will either manage or be managed. Your understanding on management helps build management knowledge skills. You will likely have managerial responsibilities even if not manager. Might have to work with managers.
Challenges of management
A portion of duties are often more clerical than managerial. Spend significant amount of time in meetings and dealing with interruptions which can be time consuming and unproductive. Have to deal with a variety of personalities. Hard to motivate workers in the face of uncertainty or chaos. Not in full control of your destiny.
Why management may be rewarding
You’re responsible for good work environment where members can use their best abilities to achieve goal. You get to support, coach, use imagination. Get to meet variety of people, receive recognition and status, attractive compensation.
