MG Flashcards
What are the principles of MG Employment?
PICMDEEP
Pairs Interlocking fires Coordination of fires Mutual support Defilade Enfilade Economy Protection
What are the methods of fire control?
Verbal Hand and arm signals Prearranged signals Personal contact Range card
What are the six elements of fire control?
Alert Direction Description Range Method of fire Command to open fire
M249/M240 sustained rate of fire?
M249- 50 rpm 3-5 round burst
M240- 100 rpm 6-9 round burst
Gunner pauses 4-5 seconds between bursts
Barrel change every 10 minutes
M249/M240 rapid rate of fire?
Trying to gain fire superiority
M249- 100rpm 6-8 round burst
M240- 200rpm 10-12 round burst
Gunner pauses 2-3 seconds between bursts
Barrel change every 2 minutes
M249/M240 cyclic rate of fire?
Used for combat emergencies
M249 850rpm
M240-650-950rpm
M60- 550rpm
Barrel change every minute
What positions are used in the offense?
Primary
Alternate
Supplementary
What are two types of techniques used for air defense?
Football field technique
(Fast mover- 2 fields, Slow mover- 1 field)
Reference point technique
What are the 3 assault firing positions?
Hip firing position
Underarm firing position
Shoulder firing position
What are the miscellaneous firing positions?
Sitting position with tripod mount Prone position Legs crossed Legs braced Aircraft firing position
Who is a sector of fire assigned to?
An individual, a weapon, or a unit
Who is a primary sector of fire assigned to and why?
Assigned to a gun team to cover the most likely avenue of enemy approach
What is an FPL?
A predetermined line along which grazing fire is placed to stop an enemy assault
What is a principal direction of fire?
Direction of fire assigned primarily to cover and area that has good fields of fire
What is grazing fire?
Occurs when the center of the cone of fires rises less than 1m above the ground
What is plunging fire?
When the danger space is within the beaten zone. Occurs at longer ranges, when firing from higher ground to low ground, and when firing abruptly
What are the classes of fire in respect to the ground? Weapon? Target?
Ground- Grazing and plunging fire
Weapon- Fixed, Traversing, Searching, Traverse and Searching, Swinging Traverse, Free gun
Target- Frontal, Flanking, Oblique, Enfilade
What is trajectory?
Path of the round in flight to the target. Recoil, stability, and control of the weapon all affect the trajectory of the round.
What is the beaten zone?
Elliptical pattern formed on the ground by the striking rounds. Length changes as the range to the target increases
What is danger space?
Space between the MG and the target where the trajectory rises less than 1.8m off the ground.
Describe fixed fire?
Delivered against a point target when depth and width of the beaten zone covers the target
Describe traversing fire?
Fire distributed IN WIDTH with successive changes in direction.
Gunner selects several aiming points throughout the width of the target. Aiming points are close enough to provide coverage without wasting ammo
Describe Searching fire?
Fire distributed IN DEPTH by changes in elevation.
Gunner selects several aiming points. Changes made to each aiming point depend on the range and slope
Describe Traversing and Searching fire?
Fire distributed IN WIDTH and DEPTH by changes in elevation and direction.
Provides good coverage of a target
Describe Swinging Traverse
Wider distance can be covered with distribution of fire laterally.
No change to elevation or range. Used against a target with great width
Describe Free Gun
Fire distributed against a target that requires rapid, major changes in direction and elevation that can not be achieved while using the T&E
What is Frontal Fire?
Occurs when the long axis of the beaten zone is at a right angle to the front of the target or in line with the target
What is Flanking Fire?
Occurs the when the gunner is to the flank of the target
What is Oblique Fire?
When the long axis of the beaten zone is at any other angle than a right angle
What is Enfilade Fire?
When the long axis of the beaten zone coincides with the long axis of the target
They types of fire used for Point, Area, Linear, Deep, and Linear target with depth?
Point- Fixed fire Area- Traverse and Search Linear- Traversing Fire Deep- Searching Fire Linear targets with depth- Traverse and Search
What are the two types of range cards?
What is the DA Form?
FPL and PDF
DA Form 5517-R
Range Card data?
Weapon Symbol Sector of Fire PDF or FPL Range, Azimuth, and number label to predetermined target Dead space Distance and azimuth from a known point or 8 digit grid Magnetic north arrow Data section
M122 Tripod
Traversing Hand wheel- 50mils left and 50 miles right of the center. Readings taken from left side
Traverse bar is numbered every 100mils to the 450 mils to the left of center and 425 mils to the right of center
Elevation handwheel- 1 click= 1 mil
Handwheel scale divided into 5 mil divisions and 1 mil subdivisions for a total of 50 mil increments.
There are 200 mils above and below the zero mark for a total of 400 mils in elevation change
How is the major and minor reading taken on the M122 tripod?
Major is taken from the elevation screw plate
Minor is taking from the handwheel.
Two readings are separated by a slash (/)
