A

Gil Y’Barbo founded Nacogdoches. Y’Barbo led his people back to east Texas without permission. East Texas settlers were furious about being forced to leave their homes.

Guiterrez-Magee expedition.

A

Jose Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara traveled to the United States in 1811 to get help
freeing Texas from Spanish rule. He met Augustus Magee and together they created the Republican Army of the North. In Texas the Republican Army captured Nacogdoches, Goliad, and San Antonio. Then they declared Texas independent from Spain.

Battle of Medina

A

Bloodiest Battle in Texas History. The Republican Army were killed in battle or executed after. There were no survivors. Texas remained under Spanish control for the next 7 years.

Mexico’s Government

A

Following independence, debates began over how Mexico should be governed. Two new political parties were forward called Federalists and Centralists.
Federalists took power first and wrote a new constitution for Mexico in 1824 that would directly affect Texas.
Federalists - Believes in a weak Central government that shares power with the states.
Centralists - Believes in a Central government that is stronger than the staes.
