Rubi’s report
Marques de Rubi was sent to Texas to inspect the missions after the 7 Years War. He reported to the king Texas missions should be abandoned and all east Texas settlers should move to San Antonio.
Founding of Nacogdoches
Gil Y’Barbo founded Nacogdoches. Y’Barbo led his people back to east Texas without permission. East Texas settlers were furious about being forced to leave their homes.
Louisiana Purchase
U.S purchased the Louisiana territory from France. The whole territory costed $15 million.
Neutral Ground
The U.S and Spain couldn’t decide on the border of Texas so they made the space Neutral ground meaning there is no authority or law.
Adams-Onis Treaty
U.S gets - Sabine river is its border. Florida.
Spain gets - U.S promises to leave Texas alone.
Grito de Dolores
Father Miguel Hidalgo called for Mexican citizens to fight for independence from Spain.

Guiterrez-Magee expedition.
Jose Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara traveled to the United States in 1811 to get help
freeing Texas from Spanish rule. He met Augustus Magee and together they created the Republican Army of the North. In Texas the Republican Army captured Nacogdoches, Goliad, and San Antonio. Then they declared Texas independent from Spain.
Battle of Medina
Bloodiest Battle in Texas History. The Republican Army were killed in battle or executed after. There were no survivors. Texas remained under Spanish control for the next 7 years.
Plan de Iguala
- Declared Mexico independent from Spain.
- Mexican people would have equal rights.
- Catholicism would be the official religion of Mexico.
Treaty of Cordoba
August 21, 1821- Treaty of Cordoba was signed declaring Mexico independent from Spain.
Moses Austin
He wanted to bring Anglo-American families to settle in Texas.
Nickname: Grandfather of Texas.
Stephen F. Austin’s Colony
- Between the Colorado and Brazos rivers.
- Area had rich soil, access to water, + warm climate.
Mexico’s Government
Following independence, debates began over how Mexico should be governed. Two new political parties were forward called Federalists and Centralists.
Federalists took power first and wrote a new constitution for Mexico in 1824 that would directly affect Texas.
Federalists - Believes in a weak Central government that shares power with the states.
Centralists - Believes in a Central government that is stronger than the staes.

- Divided Mexico into: 19 states and 4 territories.
- Created the state of Coahuila y Tejas.
