Because of the long distance, taxes, and they wanted equal rights.

Father Hidalgo called for Mexican citizens to fight for independence from Spain known as, “Grito de Dolores”
What does “Grito de Dolores” mean?
A cry of pain.
What is a filibuster?
A filibuster is a person who would go to another country to try and take it over by waging war. They do this without the support of their country.
Who was Philip Nolan?
He was the first filibuster!
Why did Philip Nolan come to Texas?
To catch wild horses.
What did the Spanish think Philip Nolan was?
An American spy.

Jose Benardo Gutierrez de Lara and Augustus Magee.

The Spanish.
What did General Arrendono do with the survivors of the Republican Army?
They were killed during battle, or executed afterwards.
Why was Galveston an idea base location for rebels?
Because of it’s remote location.

He was a pirate
What did Jean Lafitte do?
He claimed to support the rebels, but he was more interested in stealing Spanish cargo.

He was the last filibuster.
What did Dr. James Long do?
He led a group that declared Texas independent, but was taken captative and killed six months later.
What happened in 1820?
Agustin de Iturbide issued a plan to establish a Mexican empire!
What was Plan de Iguala?
It declared Mexico independent from Spain, made Mexican people have equal rights, and made Catholicism the official religion of Mexico.
When was the Treaty of Cordoba signed declaring Mexico independent from Spain?
August 21, 1821.
What were the terms of the Treaty of Cordoba?
That Spain no longer had control over Mexico and Texas became a part of Mexico.

Mexico gets independence!

Mexico writes their constitution.
