Who are the Metis?
People of mixed Native and French descent
Why did the Metis rebel?
- They were not consulted when the govt purchased their land.
- They felt threatened by the railroad.
- They felt threatened by arrival of new immigrants.
Why did Louis Riel’s death spark protests in Quebec?
Because he fought for French rights and cultures so his death spark French Canadian nationalism
What is assimilation?
The government wanted Natives to give up their beliefs and absorb the Canadian culture.
What happened in residential schools?
Native children were removed from their homes and sent to schools run by the Catholic Church. The children lived in poor conditions and were often physically, verbally and sexually abused. They were forced to forget their Native tongue and culture and assimilate to Canadian ways of life.
