Methoods of studying the brain Flashcards
what are the different approaches of neuro psych testing?
Standard(fixed ) battery, process approach and middle ground approach
What is a fixed battery approach?
It’s a general test where all your skills are evaluated. It needs to stay the same for everyone. Have to do all tests
What are the pros of the fixed battery approach?
Overall skillets are tested. Good for beginners bc its standard. scores are objective and straight forward.
What are the cons of the fixed battery approach?
Time-consuming could take hrs. expensive. Everyone has to do the same tests in the same way to work. It isn’t specific to why you failed.
what is the process approach?
where you get to pick and choose which test is appropriate. the assessment varies. Tests can be changed.
what are the pros of process approach?
focuses on important deficits. Emphasis on why the person failed. non-standardized. acknowledge the person’s individuality.
what are the cons of process approach?
Difficult method to teach bc you learn through experience. not best for large-scale research, assessment can be biased.
What is SA’s main focus in Neuro
HIV Cognitive disabilities, FASD, strokes, dementias and TBI.
What methods study the brain brain
neuropsychological tests,
lesioning, and stimulation techniques.
neuroimaging
electrical recording.
How is neuroimaging helpful?
It can locate the areas of the brain that are damaged and determine the size of the damage
what is brain structuring?
mapping the structure of your brain via CT or MRI
What is functional mapping?
Mapping the function of your brain via EEG, PET, FMRI
what does CT stand for
computer tomography
MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging
Explain CT
uses x- rays to map the structure of your brain. Can show strokes and tumors.
