methods of practice Flashcards
what is whole practice
practicing the skill in its entirety wihtout breaking it into sub-routines
why might whole practice be used
- if the skill is fast and discrete, highly organised or simple
- so the performer gets a feel (kinaesthesis) of the whole task as they develop
- if the performer is in the advanced autonomous stage of learning
- if the sub-routines need to stay in a specific order
what type of practice is a golf swing an example of
whole practice
what are the advantages of whole practice
- get a feel for the whole skill
- helps create motor programmes
- more realisitc so helps produce the effects of positive transfer
- helps make the skill consistent
what are the disadvantages of whole practice
- can place unneceassary demands on performer
- possibility of fatigue
- can be too much information to process
what is whole-part-whole practice
assessing the skill, identifying a weakness to practice, then putting the skill back together
why might whole-part-whole practice be used
- when a beginner is doing a complex task and needs to focus of one part of the skill at a time
- if the skill is highly organised
- so the coach can highlight a weakness and correct it
what type of practice is a swimming stroke an example of
whole-part-whole practice
what are the advantages of whole-part-whole practice
- can provide motivation
- provides immediate feedback
- allows corrections to be integrated back into the full skill
- fluency can be maintained
what are the disadvantages of whole-part-whole practice
- may produce negative transfer if not integrated back into the full skill
- can be time consuming
what is progressive part practice
practising the first part of the skill then adding parts gradually
sometimes known as ‘chaining’
why might progressive part practice be used
- if the skill is serial, low organised or complex
what type of practice is a dance routine an example of
progressive part practice
what are the disadvantages of progressive part practice
- can be time consuming
- danger of negative transfer
- coach must decide whether to allow breaks or not
what are the advantages of progressive part practice
- learner can focus on one aspect of the task and then identify any weaknesses
- can rest
- helps increase motivation
- improves confidence
