Methods of Hair Removal Flashcards
Describe hard wax
-aka “hot wax”
-no strip method of waxing
-available in blocks, disks, pellets and beads, should have a “heavy honey” consistency
-used on more stubborn, coarse hairs
-used on the underarm, bikini, and face
Describe soft wax
-aka “cold wax”, “liquid wax” or “lukewarm wax”
-strips are used to remove the wax
-can be used all over the body
-tends to be more painful than hard wax as it sticks to the skin more
What are 4 different types of hard and soft wax?
- Tea tree oil: natural antiseptic that calms and repairs sensitive skin, making it ideal for delicate areas
- Azulene: Great for the face and body, gentle properties help reduce redness and aid the healing process.
- Lavender: Ultra gentle, ideal for sensitive skin
- Chamomile: Anti-inflammatory, bactericidal and hypoallergenic
What are the main ingredients found in both hard and soft wax?
Resin: extract from pine trees, forms a smooth uniform base for easy application
Beeswax: can tolerate high temperatures and provides a mould/structure
Paraffin: holds the wax together/binding
Carnauba Wax: Extract from palm trees
Describe the methods of hair removal other than waxing
- Laser hair removal:
-uses a laser to destroy the hair follicle and permanently reduce hair growth
-laser targets darker cells of the hair while avoiding damage to the surrounding skin - Electrolysis:
-use of short-wave electric currents to destroy the roots of the hair and permanently reduce hair growth - Threading:
-uses cotton thread that is twisted and rolled along the surface of the skin to remove it from the follicle
-used mainly to shape eyebrows and remove facial hair - Sugaring:
-uses a sugar paste to remove the hair from the root
-natural, one of the least painful methods of hair removal - Depilatories:
-a “chemical razor blade”, available in gel/cream/lotion/aerosol/roll-on formats
-uses a highly alkaline chemical (usually calcium thioglycolate) to dissolve the protein structure of he hair, causing it to separate easily form the skin’s surface - Shaving:
-uses a razor to cut the hair off the skin’s surface
-can be very irritating and result in ingrowns
-
epilation vs depilation
epilation: removal of hair below the skin/from the root, via waxing/threading/sugaring/electrolysis/
depilation: removal of the hair from the skin’s surface, via shaving or depilatories
sugaring vs. waxing
sugaring:
-sticks only to the hair and not the skin
-gentler and generally less painful than waxing
-applied in the opposite direction of hair growth, removed in the same direction of hair growth
waxing:
-sticks to the hair and the skin
-generally hotter than sugar paste and can be more irritating
-applied in the same direction of hair growth and removed opposite to hair growth
