Methods in Social Ψ Flashcards
How does people tendency to be overconfident about wheter they could have predicted a given outcome called
Hindsight bias
Why should we prioritize random samples
to have a more representative sample of the population and contrarely to convenience sample that target specific group of a population which are not representative
Does correlation establish causation
NO!
What characterises experimental research
Task, situations and conditions are randomly assigned to random person of the population
This type of research means to explain why relationship exists and how situations affect behaviour
What is external validity
Factor that explains how well the results of a study can be generalized to context outside the conditions of the lab.
What does internal validity stands for
Validation that there is no third variable that may influence the results of the study (aka no external influence)
What may influence internal validity (5)
- Selection bias
- Differential attribution
- fundamental attribution bias - Regression of the mean
- tendency of extreme scores to be followed by less extremes scores - Experimenter / rater bias
- Expectancy / Hawthorne Effect
How does differential attribution influence internal validity
People who tend to stay in a more taxing or upsetting condition are more likely to be different from people in another conditon. Thus, this demonstrate the importance of random sampling
What leads to high internal validity
- Random Sampling!
- Interviewing participant after experiement
What favors replicabiity
Open science!
