Methods in clinical Flashcards
Primary data
raw data:collected by the researcher
e.g clinicial interviews with mentally ill patients-Goldstein (1998)- gender diff in schizophrenia
Secondary data
gathered by someone else used for further research
e.g hospital records/doctor notes
Strengths + weaknesses of primary data:
-high validity-research question+variables operationalised by researcher- accurate + meets study aims+ collected at the time of research-clinicial being a fast-paced area-DSM constantly updated
-can be expensive:start at the beginning-collecting pps, equipment etc
-can be time consuming
S+W of secondary data
-relatively inexpensive or free-public access statistics
-may be less valid: may be gathered for reasons differing to specific study aims+ unaware of potential bias lowering validity
-quick to obtain-data avaliable
