Words that all share the same topic.
Semantic field
A naming word (thing, person, place or etc.).
Noun
A describing word.
Adjective
An action word.
Verb
A word that describes an action, usually ending in -ly.
Adverb
Comparing one thing to another using the word ‘like’ or ‘as’.
Simile
Describing one thing as if it is another.
Metaphor
Two opposite words put together to create a different meaning (e.g. bittersweet).
Oxymoron
Descriptive words, often on a particular theme (e.g. natural imagery, celestial imagery).
Imagery
A play on words; a type of witty joke.
Pun
A 14-line love poem with an ABAB rhyme scheme. It ends in a rhyming couplet and uses iambic pentameter.
Sonnet
Five ‘da-dum’ beats per line (10 separate beats in total).
Iambic pentameter
When the audience knows something that the character do not.
Dramatic irony
When something that happens earlier in a text is a clue or reflection of something that will happen later.
Foreshadowing
A character making a speech alone on stage, to reveal their thoughts in front of the audience.
Soliloquy
A character speaking alone for a long time, while other characters are on stage.
Monologue
A character saying something to themselves in the middle of a conversation with others.
Aside
Putting things that are not similar next to each other.
Juxtaposition
An idea or image that is used many times in a piece of writing.
Motif
Giving human emotions to nature, animals or objects.
Pathetic fallacy
