3
Q

what is naturalistic observation

A

takes place in pp’s natural setting without any manipulation from researcher

4
Q

what is a structured observation

A

manipulation of an artificial setting so the same situation can be repeated with different pp’s (replicable)

6
Q

another strength of naturalistic observation

A

gathers much in depth detailed data because observers can record speech, actions, body language, and emotions.

7
Q

state a weakness of naturalistic observation

A

subjective as observer has the choice of observing what to record so an element of interpretation

8
Q

state another weakness of naturalistic observation

A

lacks reliability as it takes places in the pp’s natural setting which is hard to replicate.

9
Q

what is non participant observation

A

observers are not part of the study - they sit out of the activity and are not involved.

10
Q

strength of non-pp observation

A

the observer can record more data because they have better ability to concentrate on pp and can makes notes during the study

11
Q

weakness of non-pp observation

A

likely to affect the situation just by their presence - they are noticeable by pp’s and so lacks validity as normal behaviour of pp’s might not be recorded

13
Q

strength of pp observation

A

high ecological validity because pp is in a natural setting - researcher will affect the study or make it unnatural

14
Q

weakness of pp observation

A

observer may be too involved that they don’t have time to record all the data - they can’t step back from the situation.

15
Q

what is covert observation

A

pp does not know they are being studied (can be pp or non-pp)

16
Q

what is overt observation

A

pp’s aware that observation is taking place

17
Q

time tallying

A

making a tally mark every minute

18
Q

event tallying

A

tallying every-time the particular event being investigated occurs
