Meterology Flashcards
What are the two most common liquids found in thermometers?
Alcohol and mercury
What are the two types of thermometers?
Dry and wet
Define meteorology
The study of weather
What is a dry thermometer?
A thermometer not affected by the moisture of the air
Define climate
Long-term weather pattern
Define weather
Phenomena occurring in the atmosphere in the short-term
Where are thermometers placed to shield them?
Stevenson Screen
Explain a wet bulb.
-Has a wick over the bulb leading to a reservoir of pure water
-The water migrates up the wick and keeps it damp
-Water evaporates from the wick, drawing latent heat from it and reducing the temperature shown
What is the depression of the wet bulb?
The amount by which the wet bulb thermometer reads lower than the dry bulb thermometer
What is the rate of evaporation directly proportional to?
Temperature
What is the rate of evaporation inversely proportional to?
Humidity of the air
When is evaporation rapid?
When temperature is high and/or humidity is low
When is depression large?
When temperature is high and/or humidity is low
When is evaporation slow?
When temperature is low and/or humidity is high
When is depression small?
When temperature is low and/or humidity is high
