Flotation (Ship stability and construction) Flashcards
Draught
Distance between the waterline and the keel of the vessel
Freeboard
Distance between the waterline and the Freeboard deck
Freeboard deck
The uppermost complete deck exposed to the weather, which has permanent means of closing all openings open to the wether and below which all openings in the side of the ship are fitted with permanent means of watertight closing
Why are draught and freeboard inversely proportional?
- Draught increases=freeboard decreases
- Draught decreases=freeboard increases
What are the four international conventions on load lines?
- To determine the minimum safe freeboard for a vessel based on damage stability calculations ad subdivisions
- To ensure that cargo ships would not be overloaded and sail in an unsafe and unseaworthy condition
- To standardise loading limits
- Water density and seasonal conditions considered for each load line zones

What is the distance between TF&F,T&S and S&W?
