Meteorology Flashcards
How does a Hurricane Occur?
During warm weather, water can evaporate from the oceans to form large storm clouds. If these cumulonimbus clouds combine, they can form a hurricane, typhoon or cyclone, depending on where it is.
What is the weather like when one is 70-100 km away from the centre of the hurricane?
Temperatures and pressure are slightly cooler and lower than their usual temperatures. Showers develop as clouds form. The wind also starts to rise.
What is the weather like when one is 30-50 km away from the centre of the hurricane?
Wind Speeds are at about 100 kph. Pressure and temperatures are low and torrential rain occurs with about 250 mm in a day.
What is the weather like when one is 5-20 km away from the centre of the hurricane?
Temperatures are slightly higher, but the pressure is very low. Little wind and some sun.
What needs to be there for a hurricane to occur?
Humid warm and unstable air, a supply of energy and circulatory movement of air due to Coriolis force.
