Metazoa Flashcards
Define Opisthokonts
they sahre two conpicuous features that are uncommon in other eukaryotes:
1. almost all cells in this group have flat mitochondrial cristae
2. flagellated cells typically have a single emergent flagellum that inserts at the posterior end of the cell that propels cell (think swimming sperm)
Metazoa have 5 features, what are they?
- collagen / Extracellular matrix (ECM)
2.spermatozoid structure - centriole (at base of cilia)
- meiosis directly produces gametes
- desmosomes = cells can be joined by strong membranous junctions between cells
Features of a spermatozoid structure?
- conical head containing nucleus and acrosome
- middle section containing mitochondria and two centrioles
- flagellum
define acrosome
an anterior prolongation of a spermatozoon that releases egg-penetrating enzymes.
define desmosome
a structure where two adjacent cells are attached, formed from protein plaques in the cell membranes linked by filaments.
when did the first Metazoa appear in the fossil record?
Precambrian period
What is a phylum?
usually defined by having a set of distinct morphological features. The defining characteristic.
What is the Ectoderm?
Outer layer in the germ layers of Eumetazoa
Endoderm?
Inner layer in the germ layer of the germ layers of Eumetazoa
define Diploblastic
Define Triploblastic
3 germ layers?
- Ectoderm = surface of the embryo
- Endoderm = inner-most germlayer (forms gut)
- Mesoderm = between the ectoderm and endoderm in triploblastic animals
Define Gastrulation
formation of the germ layers
define Pseudocoelom
cavity not completely lined with mesoderm
define True Coelom
cavity fully enclosed within thin sheets of mesodermally derived tissues
define Acoelomates
no cavity between gut and body wall seen in flatworms
define pseudocoelomates
“tube within tube” cavity not completely derived from mesoderm seen in nematodes
define Coelomates
cavity completelyderived from mesoderm seen in annelids
Define Protostome
blastopore forms the mouth first
define deuterostome
blasopore forms the anus first
Spiral cleavage is
planes of division are diagonal to vertical axis of embryo
Radial cleavage is
planes of division are parallel or perpendicular to vertical axis of embryo
determinate development is
early cleavage cells with rigid developmental fate (mosaic embryo)
Indeterminate development is
early cleavage cells retain capacity to develop into completes embryo (regulative embryo)
Define tripartite arrangement
three groups within the coelom in deuterosomes
1. prtocoel
2. mesocoel
3. metacoel
Define Lophotrochzoans
clade uniting lophophore - bearing animals with those with a trochophore larvae
Define Ecdysozoans
share the presence of a moulting cuticle
what are Mesozoa?
minute wormlike animals, no tissues and no organs, composed of maybe 20-30 cells arranged in two layers
are all parasites of marine invertebrates
