Metamorphic Rocks Flashcards
1
Q
Factors of formation of Metamorphic Rocks
A
Heat and/or pressure
2
Q
Two types of Metamorphic Rocks
A
Contact Metamorphism and Regional Metamorphism
3
Q
Contact Metamorphism
A
Temperature only, not pressure
Created by very hot temperature from magma (typically around intrusive igneous rock) having direct contact with surrounding rocks which changes the rocks minerals and/or geological texture.
4
Q
Regional Metamorphism
A
Temperature and Pressure
- Regional metamorphic rocks formed during mountain-building (orogeny), at collision of lithospheric plates (destructive plate margins)
- Reflect the combined effects of increased temperature and pressures
- Characteristic products are anisotropic
- Two exceptions (marble and quartzite) are isotropic
