Q

Contact Metamorphism

A

Temperature only, not pressure
Created by very hot temperature from magma (typically around intrusive igneous rock) having direct contact with surrounding rocks which changes the rocks minerals and/or geological texture.

Q

Regional Metamorphism

A

Temperature and Pressure

  • Regional metamorphic rocks formed during mountain-building (orogeny), at collision of lithospheric plates (destructive plate margins)
  • Reflect the combined effects of increased temperature and pressures
  • Characteristic products are anisotropic
  • Two exceptions (marble and quartzite) are isotropic
