Metamorphic Rocks Flashcards
Metamorphism
Isochemical changes by which rocks are changed by heat and or pressure
Metamorphic aureole
The area of country rock altered by the igneous intrusion
Factors affecting aureole width
Angle of intrusion
Temp of intrusion
Country rock
Size and comp of intrusion
Polymorph
A mineral which exists in 2+ forms with identical chemical compositions
Metamorphic facies
Set of metamorphic minerals that were formed under similar temps and pressures
Porphyroblastic fabrics
Large crystal that grew during metamorphism and surrounded by finer ground mass
Granoblastic fabric
Randomly oriented equidimensional crystals
Crenulation cleavage
Amount/ direction of stress applied to rocks varies so several foilations in different directions
Slaty cleavage
Rock that split into thin sheets along their cleavage planes
Schistosity
Rock having a silky shine die to the parallel alignment of micas
Gneissose banding
Formed when light and dark minerals separated into bands
