Metamorphic Rocks Flashcards
What are metamorphic rocks?
Rocks that form when existing rocks are changed.
What process happens to make metamorphic rocks
heat and pressure changes existing rocks
How long do metamorphic rocks take to form?
Millions to hundreds of millions of years.
What are examples of rocks that can be changed?
Igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic
Why can rocks be heated up?
if they are exposed to magma from a volcano, or are deep underground
Why do they get heated up if they are deep underground?
Because the Earths core is very hot
What causes pressure on the rocks?
when rocks get buried, or when they get pushed by tectonic plates.
What happens at high heat and pressure?
rocks break down and change into a different arrangement of minerals.
What is foliation?
Minerals getting pushed into layers.
What is the process of making a metamorphic rock called?
Metamorphism
What are the two types of metamorphic rock classified on?
Texture
What are two key things to look for in a metamorphic rock?
is it foliated?
does it have crystals?
What happens in metamorphism?
Existing rocks get pushed together into one without being melted.
Describe non-foliated
does not have the appearance of a foliated rock, and generally form under condition where pressure is applied regularly.
What time/age is metamorphism for a rock usually?
The end of it ‘life’.
