Metamorphic Rock Flashcards
Metamorphic Rocks
A rock that is the result of a transformation of pre-existing rock
How do Metamorphic Rocks form
They are formed through the mineralogical and structural adjustment of solid rocks. This adjustment occurs via heat and pressure
What Role does Heat and Pressure have on the creation of Metamorphic rocks
Heat and pressure are what allow a parent rock to metamorphize into a metamorphic rock. It changes the rocks composition and appearance
What are the two types of Metamorphic Rock
Contact metamorphism and regional metamorphism
Contact Metamorphism
This occurs when magma breaks through into existing rock. This change is relatively small and is said to be low-grade metamorphism.
Regional Metamorphism
This occurs due to changes in pressure and temperature over a large region of the crust. This is said to be high-grade metamorphism.
Explain the rock cycle
Igneous rocks are formed from magma or lava, then this igneous rock is weathered and undergoes the process of becoming a sedimentary rock. The sedimentary rock is then buried and changes into a metamorphic rock via heat and pressure. The metamorphic rock is then melted and turned back into magma which cools and forms an igneous rock.
