Igneous Rocks Flashcards
Igneous Rocks
A rock formed from the cooling and solidification of lava or magma.
How does cooling rate effect crystal growth
The faster a rock cools the more crystals there are but these are small however if a rock cools slowly it will have less crystals but they will be much larger.
Intrusive Igneous Rocks (Plutonic)
These are formed when magma cools and solidifies within small pockets contained in the planet’s crust.
Extrusive Igneous Rocks (Volcanic)
Extrusive igneous rocks are a result of lava pouring onto the surface of the planet and cooling.
What is the difference between lava and magma
Lava is a molten rock found above the Earth and magma is molten rock below the Earth’s surface.
What are examples of intrusive igneous rocks
Diorite, granite, and pegmatite
What are examples of extrusive igneous rocks
andesite, basalt, obsidian, pumice, and rhyolite
