Metals Reacting With Water/Steam Flashcards
Potassium
Reacts EXPLOSIVELY with water. Catches fire and melts, darting across the water surface. Causes hydrogen to burn with a lilac flame.
Sodium
Reacts VIOLENTLY with water. Catches fire and melts, darting across water surface. Hydrogen may burn with a yellow flame.
Calcium
Reacts VIGOROUSLY with water. Lots of bubble of hydrogen.
Magnesium
Reacts VERY SLOWLY with cold water. Few bubbles of hydrogen gas produced.
Hot magnesium reacts VIOLENTLY with steam to form white powder (MgO) and hydrogen.
Zinc
No reaction with water.
Hot zinc BURNS in steam.
Zinc oxide: Yellow when hot, white when cool
Iron
No reaction with water.
Red hot iron reacts SLOWLY with steam.
3Fe(s) + 4H2O(g) -> Fe3O4(s) + 4H2(g)
Lead, Copper & Silver
No reaction with water or steam.
