Metals Plus Acid Flashcards
List 3 acids
Hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), nitric acid (HNO3). (All acids contain hydrogen).
Test for hydrogen gas
When ignited, hydrogen will burn with a loud squeaky pop
A salt is a compound formed when the hydrogen in an acid is replaced (whole or partially) by a metal.
magnesium (metal) + sulfuric acid (acid) -> magnesium sulfate (salt) + hydrogen (hydrogen from the acid)
Sodium (Na)+ hydchloric acid (HCl)->
Sodium chloride (NaCl)+ hydrogen (H2) (hydrogen is diatomic)
Magnesium (Mg)+ nitric acid (HNO3)->
Magnesium nitrate (MgNO3)+ hydrogen (H2)
Potassium (K)+ sulphuric acid (H2SO4)->
Potassium sulfate (KSO4)+ hydrogen (H2)
What happens when a metal reacts with a acid
The metal replaces the hydrogen to make a salt with the acid + hydrogen
